Can offsetting fix climate change?

Unfortunately, no. According to scientists, only significant and quick emissions reduction will keep the possibility open of limiting global heating to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, as envisaged in the Paris Agreement. Actual emissions reduction must be the priority for all governments, corporations, and NGOs – including CARE. We need at least a 45% reduction in global emissions by 2030.

Offsetting is a temporary measure as we make the transition to clean energy, technologies, systems and societies. Thus, offsetting needs to be embedded in strategies that work towards specific and ambitious emissions reduction, while we also support the most vulnerable communities to adapt.

Offsetting also helps the countries in which the project takes place to make the transition to a zero carbon economy.
