What is the Gold Standard?

The Gold Standard was founded by a group of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), including World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and is one of the world’s leading certification standards for carbon credits. It is currently the strictest standard for carbon credits. The CO2 reduction of the climate projects is checked and it is ascertained whether this reduction would have not taken place without the project (additionality). It also examines whether the local communities are sufficiently involved in the project, that there are no negative environmental effects and whether the local households benefit from it socio-economically.
