Virginia is a member of Mvayi 2 Credit group. She is a thirty-two-year-old married woman who supports three children. She grows Irish potatoes to provide for her family and improve some of the living standards. She has been farming for ten years with the help of one family member and her husband who is also a farmer. Together with her group, they requested a loan so that they could buy fertiliser which would help improve the quality and quantity of the produce. She wants to develop this Irish potato business to the point where she can buy a shop using the revenue generated from this business and increase her profitability.
The Microloan Foundation, Lendwithcare's local partner in Malawi employs a unique 'centre' model for lending to female entrepreneurs. A centre comprises several sub-groups which share the same name as the centre. As such, you may have seen similarly named group loans from Malawi all belonging to the same centre. In this system, each woman is individually responsible for repaying her loan, but the group offers mutual support by assuming overall responsibility together.
