Khon and her family were very lucky that they managed to purchase a small boat before Cambodia was hit by severe floods. When there was heavy flooding in the area Khon's home was completely under water and she couldn’t go anywhere. Her rice paddies, as well as most of the villager's, were completely flooded so this year she will need to buy rice from the market. However, the boat has been very useful for her family. She used it to get her family, two pigs and four cows to a safe and dry place during the floods. Now her husband uses the boat to catch fish and sometimes they can earn around $20 a day. Khon is so happy that she has been able to use this boat to help her family and take them to a safe place during the floods and has subsequently been able to use it to earn money. Khon said that since she has asked for a loan her family's economic situation is better than it was before. Now the time has come to grow some maize on their land, which she will sell in bulk to a local buyer like she has done in previous years. Her female pig will deliver her piglets next month and when her piglets are healthy Khon will then be able to sell some of them. She will ask for another loan in order to buy around 40 pipes while her farming land is so far away from the irrigation system.
