We met Djerdi in the winter when her worms were hibernating, packed under layers of soil and cardboard. Her home is full of life, with chickens and goats peeping out of any available space. Djerdi is very resourceful at getting free inputs for her business. She told us how she collects rotting fruit and vegetables from all over her neighbourhood to add to the compost units with the worms. “My husband is a fisherman,” she told us. “He used worms and that is how I got the idea. I used the loan to create a shelter for the worms, and the second loan to buy a van to transport the worms around to my clients.” Djerdi lives in a creative household. Her husband is an inventor and made a machine to smoke meat. Djerdi sells the worms to fisherman and other farmers buy Djerdi’s high quality soil to produce organic food. Djerdi wished to thank her lenders, adding: “It would not be possible to have a business without the loan.”
