Like many farmers in Sangke District of Battambang Province, Mr. Vun Bo’s rice crops was destroyed by over raining and flooding the farming lands, fields, and lowlands. He couldn’t collect his crops on time so his rice paddy crops were under water for two weeks and most of the matured rice grains got rotten. The government provided each affected rice farmers with 100 kilograms of rice seeds so that they can start growing their rice paddy again. When we visited Mr. Vun his farmland was prepared and he started to plant the seeds he received from the government.
He said that he has no problem at all to repay the loan because he works as a construction worker an earns $8 (£6) a day. He also raises 2 cows at his home, the cows are ready to be sold. He plans to start another business that is fish farming, if he could get it right it will be a profitable business. He said that at his rice paddy has a pond which he will use it for farming fish. A farmer always needs to have multiple businesses to survive and cannot rely only in one business to depend on.
