I went to meet up with Mr. Sambath An to find out about his rice farming after he received the loan from LWC. He said that this year he farmed his short term rice paddy on a four hectares of farmland. He received two tones of crops per hectare and the middleman bought his rice crops at the price of $150 per tone, he made only small amount of profit on his rice paddy. Now is the time to plant his green bean on the same land that he harvested his rice paddies. The green beans are ready for harvesting in around 90 days time. The yield is around 800 kilograms per hectare which are sold to his local middleman. He also raises two cows at his home and he is hopeful that next year he will be able to sell the cows to get an extra income for his family. He plans to open a general store at his home using some of the agricultural/farming profits to start up the store.
