Umodzi Group (Meaning “Working Together” in Nyanja, language spoken in the Chipata Province of Zambia) is doing well, since receiving the loan in March 2016. We met with four members in a market place in the second-hand shop of one of the members of the group. They told us that their businesses are fine but going through a seasonal slowdown. The group businesses are mainly groceries shops and market stalls but there are also members who sell agricultural inputs such as seeds and fertilizers (Janet who is having her hair done in the picture is one of those) Jeanette sells radios, batteries and charges and Rebecca (pictured) is a hair dresser. All members of the group spent 100% of the loan money on their businesses and have been able to make all repayments so far. They are also saving as a group even though sometimes some members of the group have had to contribute extra money to make the full payment when other members have not been able to bring their installment. The group considers that since having access to the loans, their business revenue has increased and this is reflected in the fact that now they are able to buy more stock. For example, Janet who sells agricultural inputs, used to buy only 3 bags of fertiliser and now she buys 6 or 7 when she restocks. Rebecca who is a hair dresser, has been able to buy earrings and cosmetics for her salon and not only hair extensions. They consider that the business training offered by MLF throughout the loan cycle is very useful. The 4 women we interviewed send 17 children to school, some their own children and others orphans they look after. Also 4 of the women interviewed have employed 3 people in their business.
