Koffi's timber merchants

Koffi's timber merchants

I met Koffi on 23 March 2012 at his wood yard where he sells wood to local carpenters and also rents out tools like jigsaws, polishing machines and, excuse my lack of technical knowledge, a machine that makes holes in wood! Koffi buys the wood from direct from foresters in the village of Badou. He told me that the wood comes from sustainable sources and the foresters have to have a permit from the government before they are allowed to cut trees. His main cost, apart from the wood itself is the cost of transporting it. Koffi is now employing one person to assist him. He makes around £200 per month profit, although he has to make his loan repayments from this. Tracey Horner, March 2012.
