In Rumphi, the Katuwatuwa 2 group is made up of 5 married entrepreneurs who are working hard to create better livelihoods for their families. Their businesses range from selling vegetables, fish, tomatoes, snacks and garments to running restaurants and grocery stores. Together, the women support 18 children and are looking for an opportunity to strengthen their businesses and build a more secure future.
At just 28, group member Esther is a married mother of three who has built a grocery business that has operated for five years. She started the business with a simple but important purpose: to earn an income that would help her meet the basic needs of her family. Today, Esther runs the grocery store with the assistance of one family member. Through her determination and commitment, she has kept the business going, but access to additional capital would allow her to buy more stock and make the business more productive.
Esther is also thinking beyond her current business. Her ambition is to build shops that she can rent out, creating an additional and more sustainable source of income for her family. She hopes that by growing her grocery business now using her loan share, she can gradually turn this long-term dream into reality.
The group loan will give the Katuwatuwa 2 group the capital they need to invest in their individual businesses and increase their trading capacity. Members will use the funds to purchase vegetables, fish, tomatoes, snacks, and clothing. At the same time, those operating restaurants and grocery stores will also invest in stock and other business requirements.
The Microloan Foundation, Lendwithcare's local partner in Malawi employs a unique 'centre' model for lending to female entrepreneurs. A centre comprises several sub-groups which share the same name as the centre. As such, you may have seen similarly named group loans from Malawi all belonging to the same centre. In this system, each woman is individually responsible for repaying her loan, but the group offers mutual support by assuming overall responsibility together.
