Malawi
The women of Bera 9 Group work together through maize farming to provide food and income for their families. The group has five members, some married and others separated, supporting 21 children. With a loan, each woman will improve her own maize farm while sharing labour, advice, and support, so the benefits of the loan help the entire group.
The featured member, Wongani, is 30 years old and separated, supporting one child. She has been farming maize for three years and plans to use her portion of the loan to buy fertiliser and seed. With better harvests, Wongani hopes to grow her business, improve her living standards, and ensure adequate food for her family.
Supporting this loan helps not only Wongani but also strengthens the livelihoods of the whole Bera 9 Group.
The Microloan Foundation, Lendwithcare's local partner in Malawi employs a unique 'centre' model for lending to female entrepreneurs. A centre comprises several sub-groups which share the same name as the centre. As such, you may have seen similarly named group loans from Malawi all belonging to the same centre. In this system, each woman is individually responsible for repaying her loan, but the group offers mutual support by assuming overall responsibility together.
