Malawi
The women of Mchenga 4 Group are working together through maize farming to ensure food security for their families. All five members are married and together they support 17 dependents, making good harvests essential to their daily lives.
The group requested a loan to invest in their farms. While each woman will use her share to strengthen her own maize field, the group works closely together, sharing labour and farming knowledge so that the benefits of the loan support everyone.
The featured member, Chancy, is 40 years old and married to a farmer. She supports four children and has been growing maize for three years. Chancy plans to use her portion of the loan to buy fertiliser and seed, helping her increase yields and ensure her family has enough food throughout the year.
With improved harvests, Chancy hopes to have adequate food for her household and build a more secure future for her children.
The Microloan Foundation, Lendwithcare's local partner in Malawi employs a unique 'centre' model for lending to female entrepreneurs. A centre comprises several sub-groups which share the same name as the centre. As such, you may have seen similarly named group loans from Malawi all belonging to the same centre. In this system, each woman is individually responsible for repaying her loan, but the group offers mutual support by assuming overall responsibility together.
