In Dowa District, five determined women have joined forces to form the Mwakafa Credit 5 Group, collaborating to grow their small businesses and enhance their families’ wellbeing. They sought a loan to expand activities in fish trading, grocery sales, restaurant work, and snack production.
The featured member, Nora, is 42 years old, married, and a maize farmer with two children. She has been operating a grocery store for the past two years, supported by a family member. Nora started the business to generate income and provide for her household.
With her portion of the loan, Nora plans to purchase additional bread, sugar, cooking oil, and soap to broaden her stock and attract more customers. Her long-term goals include building a home for her family and giving her children access to quality education.
The other members of the Mwakafa 5 Credit Group will also invest their shares to strengthen their own enterprises. By exchanging ideas and supporting one another, they aim to increase earnings and secure a more stable, prosperous future for their families.
The Microloan Foundation, Lendwithcare's local partner in Malawi employs a unique 'centre' model for lending to female entrepreneurs. A centre comprises several sub-groups which share the same name as the centre. As such, you may have seen similarly named group loans from Malawi all belonging to the same centre. In this system, each woman is individually responsible for repaying her loan, but the group offers mutual support by assuming overall responsibility together.
