Carmen Geovanna, aged 26, is a single mother and farmer living in the tropical region of Imbabura, northern Ecuador. She has two children, aged 2 and 10. Her eldest is currently in primary school.
Carmen has worked in agriculture for four years, a trade she learned from her parents and relatives who are also farmers. She currently manages her own farm, where she cultivates tamarillo seedlings and beans across two hectares of land.
She employs ten local workers who help with crop care and harvesting. Each year, she produces over 1,000 crates of tamarillo and 50 sacks of beans, which are sold in the markets of Quito and Otavalo.
To improve her yields, Carmen applied for a loan. She plans to invest in agricultural supplies and fertilisers, and wooden stakes to support the growing seedlings. She will also allocate funds to hire labourers to assist with crop care and fertilisation.
The loan will help Carmen increase her productivity, improve her household income, and create job opportunities within her community.
