Located 130 kilometres from Lomé, the Novissi Djangome Cooperative is a group of 20 men and women with an average age of 40. They are all involved in agricultural production and take care of 80 dependants between them, including 30 schoolchildren.
One member of this group is 55-year-old Roger who has been farming for 30 years, specialising in growing cereals. He is married and has children at school. His wife is also a farmer and the couple share their household's expenses.
With his portion of this loan, Roger plans to pay for labour to ensure he can plough his land well and also buy organic inputs. He hopes this will help to increase the quality and quantity of his crops as his goal is to become a major cereal producer. Part of the profits he earns will be reinvested in his farm, and the rest will be used to send his children to school.
The other members of the cooperative will use their loan shares in similar ways with the aims of improving their own businesses and increasing their incomes so they can better support their families.
The group has requested a nine month loan which will be repaid in five monthly instalments beginning in the fifth month.
