Malawi
Ngwangwa 3 is a group situated in the Ntcheu District of Malawi, consisting of five married women who collectively care for twenty-three children. They focus on cultivating Irish potatoes and beans, using the earnings to meet their families' basic needs and support their children’s education. Ngwangwa means 'to support' in local language, and the women work hard to support each other, and to support their families.
Alice, a forty-one-year-old married woman and member of Ngwangwa 3, has been farming beans for four years. She receives assistance from two family members and her husband, who is also a farmer. Alice and her group have applied for a loan to buy fertiliser, which will help them produce higher-quality beans and Irish potatoes. Alice's ambition is to expand her business to the point where the profits allow her to purchase livestock.
The Microloan Foundation, Lendwithcare's local partner in Malawi employs a unique 'centre' model for lending to female entrepreneurs. A centre comprises several sub-groups which share the same name as the centre. As such, you may have seen similarly named group loans from Malawi all belonging to the same centre. In this system, each woman is individually responsible for repaying her loan, but the group offers mutual support by assuming overall responsibility together.
