The Titani group are located in a remote area of Chakudza in Ntcheu district, in the Central Region of Malawi. The Titani group is composed of five members. All of the members are married women and between them, they take care of 22 children one of which is an orphan. To support themselves and their children, the women engage in Irish potato farming.
Meria, a 36-year-old married mother of three, is dedicated to improving her family's livelihood by growing Irish potatoes. For the past five years, she has been cultivating these crops, which provide a crucial income to support her family and ensure her children can attend school. She manages her potato farm with the help of two family members, working diligently to maximise their yield. To further enhance her production, Meria, plans to invest in high-quality seeds and fertilisers, aiming to increase her potato harvest and continue lifting her family out of poverty.
The Microloan Foundation, Lendwithcare's local partner in Malawi employs a unique 'centre' model for lending to female entrepreneurs. A centre comprises several subgroups, each consisting of five members. These sub-groups share the same name as the centre. As such, you may have seen similarly named group loans from Malawi all belonging to the same centre. In this system, each woman is individually responsible for repaying her loan, but the group offers mutual support by assuming overall responsibility together.
