Malawi
Located in a remote area of Chakudza in Ntcheu district, in the Central Region of Malawi the Titani group is composed of five members. All of the members are married women and between them, they take care of 26 children. To support themselves and their children, the women engage in Irish potato farming.
One member of the group, Sikonda, is fifty-two years and married, and takes care of two children. She and her husband are farmers, and she focuses on growing Irish potatoes. Sikonda will use her portion of the loan to invest in her Irish potato farming business as she wishes to purchase seed and fertiliser. She started her business six years ago to support her family with necessities. The proceeds from the previous investment enabled her to pay for her children’s school fees. Looking towards the future, Sikonda wishes to start rearing livestock.
Microloan Foundation, Lendwithcare's local partner in Malawi employs a unique 'centre' model for lending to female entrepreneurs. A centre comprises several sub-groups, each consisting of five members. These sub-groups share the same name as the centre. As such, you may have seen similarly named group loans from Malawi all belonging to the same centre. In this system, each woman is individually responsible for repaying her loan, but the group offers mutual support by assuming overall responsibility together.
