The Katuwa group is composed of 20 women based in Rumphi and the majority of the group members are married. The group initially had 18 women when they accessed their first loan through LWC. The group runs small businesses mainly selling fish, groceries, and cereals among other things to earn a living and provide for their families. They would like to request another loan to invest in their businesses. The previous loan has enabled the group improve their businesses.
One member of this group is Joana. She is aged 48 and married with 3 children. Her husband works in farming. Joana sells vegetables and clothes. She would like to use the loan to buy more bundles of second hand clothes. She will be able to feed her family with the profits from the business. She started the business to educate her children. She has been running the business for 4 years and her goal is to start ordering new clothes and other home products from Tanzania. She also desires to own a house in the future. The past loan has enables her to pay for her children’s school fees.
