Mercy is 30 years old and married. She looks after her 4 children and 1 relative. Her husband runs his own small business. She is a member of the Umodzi group which is composed of 15 members. All are married women except for 1 who is widowed. Between them, they look after their own children and orphans and the majority of these children go to school. The women run various small businesses which include the selling of vegetables, groceries, cereals and cooked food to earn a living and sustain their families. They require the loan to buy additional stock for their businesses. Mercy sells maize. She requires the loan to purchase more maize. She started the business to be self-reliant and support her husband in providing for their family. She has been running the business for 6 years and 1 of her family members works in the business. Her goal is to increase her business, educate her children and own a house.
