Some lost profits but good fortune

Some lost profits but good fortune

During the recent floods in Cambodia, Khoeurt's rice paddies were damaged and she lost all of her rice. However, it seems to have been good fortune that Khoeurt applied for a loan to dig a pond since she managed to dig not just one more pond but two more and during the floods all of her ponds were full of water and fish. Their fish will be ready to catch in March 2012 and at the moment her husband goes to their ponds everyday to look after the fish. Once they have caught the fish they will sell all of them in bulk to a trader. Khoeurt's experience last year was that she was able to sell all of her fish from one pond for about $900 so this year she hopes to sell her fish for a lot more. She will start to plant maize next month and they can use the water they have reserved in their ponds to water the maize. Even though Khoeurt lost some profit when her rice paddies were damaged during the floods, she has been able to repay her loan using the profits her husband has made fishing. However, she predicts she will still need a loan to get them through the next farming season and until they can obtain a healthy working capital.
