Saret recently took out a loan to level his rice paddy which is about seven kilometres from his home. He planted the three hectares with rice but during September the area became flooded because of the heavy rains and part of his rice has been under water now for more than a month – he will lose this part of his crop. He has about one hectare that remains flooded but thinks the other two hectares will provide him with a reasonable yield when he harvests the rice in January 2012. Fortunately, Saret and his wife have also for the past six years or so produced and sold ‘Sambok Nam’, which is a thin type of pastry that is stuffed with meat, fish or other food and then cooked. They receive a daily income from this enterprise.
