Michael Fernandez is 24 years old and single. He lives with his parents and two younger sisters who are 14 and 9. To support the financial needs of his family, Michael decided to become a rickshaw driver. Michael pays around $3 a day to operate his rickshaw within a certain area and is registered to travel to several streets and roads within the city. After learning about the benefits of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) (both in terms of its environmental impact but also the reduction in fuel costs) Michael began participating in sessions and orientations to learn more about the product. He also witnessed the effectiveness and efficiency of the CEI LPG toolkit through a number of local rickshaw drivers who had already converted their old 2-stroke engines. However, Michael was worried about how he might afford the switch as well as cover the loss of earnings he would experience while his rickshaw was being updated. This is where the CEI-SEEDFINANCE-lendwithcare partnership has been really helpful. Michael was able to borrow a rickshaw, free of charge, from CEI while his rickshaw was being converted. And he was able to take out a small and affordable loan from SEEDFINANCE (which was covered by lendwithcare lenders) to cover the cost of the conversion and the testing period. Michael borrowed approximately $500 from SEEDFINANCE and is now looking forward to increasing his income because of the lower cost of LPG compared with petrol which he previously used. He also doesn't need to worry about whether or not his rickshaw will pass the Clean Air Act requirements set out by the city government. He is indeed willing and happy to serve as a good example to his fellow rickshaw drivers in Mandaluyong.
