Don Ceferino Chamba was not at home when we visited his farm near Catamayo on the 1st August 2012. However, we spent some time speaking with his wife Dona Elsa Esperanza as well as one of his neighbours who wanted to know more about the procedures for applying for a loan. His wife commented that Don Ceferino is a longstanding client of the mirofinance organisation Fundacion FACES and has received and repaid promptly several loans over the last 5-6 years. He has made repayments also on his current loan. Despite the fact that he is into his seventies Don Ceferino continues to enjoy good health and is very active. He grows maize on approximately one hectare of land that he owns, raises pigs and also currently has around 40 chickens. They are free range and are fed maize. He sells the eggs. Don Elsa suffered from cancer around three years ago but overcame the illness. They had six children but all have now left home and live separately - several in the capital Quito.
