Idaneth Subong has been running her business selling beauty products and cosmetics for 8 years. She works in a small shop with a low ceiling on the side of the street. She used her Lendwithcare loan to buy more stock of products. I ask which her most popular items are but she says all the ranges – Avon, Natasha, Personal Collection, are all popular with her customers, which are mostly women living locally. She employs 3 part-time workers in the shop, who work during the week and at weekends. Before she had her shop Idaneth used to stay at home. But she told me “I don’t want to depend on my husband’s salary. I want to help him. With my own business if I want to buy something, I can.” While we are talking Idaneth’s 5-year-old daughter comes in. Idaneth tells me she has 4 sons and 1 daughter, who are all in different schools: university, senior high school, grade 5 and kindergarten. She proudly shows me a family photo of them all. In the future she would like to buy her own building with more space. Idaneth currently rents her shop from a woman at her church, so the rent is very low, but in the future she tells me she would like to have her own building with more space and in better condition.
