Update on Azra Vatrenjak's business

We visited Azra on the 13 April 2012 at her shop in Illidza just to the west of the international airport in Sarajevo. Azra had left the shop briefly because she had driven her husband, Avdo, to the hospital - he has to travel three times a week for kidney dialysis. Her sister-in-law was attending the shop in Azra's absence. However, Azra did arrive and spoke with us. Her business is stable and she manages to earn an income for the whole family from the business. She has been running the business for seven years in total, four years in its current location. Her husband stopped working two years ago and is currently waiting for a kidney transplant. Her sister-in-law offered her kidney but it was not a match. If a match is found they will have to pay around 30,000 KM (around 13,000 pounds sterling) for the transplant operation. She rents the shop premises and pays 250 KM (around 100 pounds sterling) a month. This is her second loan with the microfinance institution ZZI and it was used mainly to buy a cash register. She has met four repayments so far since she received the loan without problems. The shop is ideal for her because it allows her the flexibility to look after her husband and take him to hospital when required. Prior to her husband's illness he had a very good job as a director of a local company and she ran the shop. Before she ran the shop she worked as a shop assistant in a fashion boutique.
