We visited Nermina Smaljovic on 16 April 2012 in the small town of Potocari near Srebrenica in eastern Bosnia. She is a widow – her husband was killed in the Srebrenica Massacre in 1995 and she receives a widow’s pension. It was raining quite heavily and Nermina was at home watching television – she is very keen on Turkish soap operas. Nermina invested her loan in growing vegetables in her quite large greenhouse next to her home. She can grow vegetables almost all year round. She grows tomatoes, onions, and peppers mainly and she keeps chickens also for their eggs and meat. Around 10-15 of the chickens died because of the extremely cold winter. Almost all her production is for her own household consumption – she does not make much money from sales but has income from her pension and one of her son’s who works to meet loan repayments. This is her third loan, the previous ones were for around £400 and £600. Once she finishes repaying this loan she wants to take out another which will assist one of her son’s to re-register to study once again – he dropped out which was a cause of some disappointment to her.
