Izeta Djuderija Update

Izeta Djuderija Update

We visited Izeta Djuderija at her tailoring shop on Friday 13 April 2012. She lives in Ilidza which is a few miles to the west of Sarajevo. This is her first loan from the local microcredit foundation ‘Zene za Zene’ which translates as ‘Women for Women’. The loan is for 12 months and she has had no difficulties meeting the first repayments. Although she had intended to buy a new sewing machine, she actually ended up buying more cloth. She has three sewing machines, including two industrial machines, already. She is working by herself at the moment. She does take on assistants from time to time, usually for 3-4 months at a time but only when she is particularly busy. Mainly she does alterations, she charges around 5 KM (around £2) to turn up trousers for example. She is busiest usually during the summer months of May through to August because the Bosnian diaspora return for their summer holidays and prefer to do their tailoring in Bosnia & Herzegovina because it is far cheaper then countries such as Germany and Austria where they live. Also, a lot of students generally ask her to prepare their graduation dresses at around this time – often bringing photographs from magazines or printed from the internet of designs they wish to copy. She has had the business for 11 years. Previously from 1984-2001 she worked as a machinist in a textile factory. Her business is stable and she always has clients, however business has diminished compared to 2-3 years ago before the economic recession when she had so many orders that she often worked until late at night, now she tends to work from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. She rents her shop, paying 250 KM (around £105 per month). She is the only person in her household of five that is working.
