Ecuador
Martha is a 47 year old entrepreneur who lives in Carchi province in the north of Ecuador. She has been working as a farmer for the past 14 years and now she grows beans on two hectares of rented farmland. She harvests her produce twice a year and sells it to traders in the local market.
From a young age, Martha has worked on a farm, helping her family in the fields. With her parent’s support, she started to grow her first crops on farmland belonging to her family, and she slowly gained the experience which she needed to run her own arable farm.
Nowadays, Martha grows beans on two hectares of rented farmland. She employs 11 workers who help with the sowing, the fertilising and the harvesting on her farm. Each year Martha harvests approximately140 sacks of dried beans which are sold to local traders.
Martha has requested a loan to fertilise her crops. She plans to use £396 to buy agricultural supplies and £373 to buy fertiliser. She will also use £203 for additional farm expenses and £158 to pay the wages of the people who will be working on the farm.
