Ecuador
Edwin Jair is a 21-year-old farmer living in the tropical region of Imbabura, Ecuador. From a very young age, he has been closely involved in agriculture, accompanying his parents in the family vegetable garden where he learned to fertilise the soil, tend crops, and harvest produce.
Through this lifelong experience, Edwin developed the skills and confidence to begin planting his own crops in the family’s fields, gradually contributing to household income and supporting his parents with daily expenses.
Today, Edwin cultivates two hectares of land, growing tree tomatoes and beans twice a year. His production is approximately 800 sacks of tree tomatoes and 140 sacks of beans annually, which he sells in local markets. Although he is currently recovering from an arm injury, his parents and the workers he employs are continuing the farm operations to ensure a successful harvest.
Edwin sought a loan to strengthen and expand his agricultural production. He plans to invest £300 in fertilisers to improve soil fertility and crop yields, £480 in essential agricultural inputs to support cultivation, £130 in wooden stakes to properly support plant growth, and £600 in a brush cutter to maintain his fields and generate additional income through work on neighbouring farms. This investment will help improve productivity, increase earnings, and create further employment opportunities within his community.
