Fernando, 61, is married and lives in the province of Carchi, in northern Ecuador. He and his wife raise pigs and grow potatoes. From a very young age, Fernando learned to work in the fields. His business has provided him with income and allowed him to educate his children, who now have their own jobs.
For twenty years, he has worked in potato farming and pig breeding, an activity always supported by his wife. Currently, he cultivates potatoes on a one-hectare plot and raises eight fattening pigs on his farm. He sells his animals and agricultural products at the city's market and livestock fair.
Fernando has applied for a loan to fertilise his crops and increase pig production. He will use the loan finance to purchase agricultural supplies, pay the wages of those working on the plot, and spend purchase of ten fattening pigs.
