Thailand
Sakhon is a 59-year-old married woman living with her husband, their two grown-up children aged 32 and 25, and a school-aged grandchild in a rural area of Surin province, in the northeastern part of Thailand. Sakhon farms 14 rai (2.24 hectares) of rice and raises cattle to support her family, and her husband and both children work alongside her on the farm.
Sakhon was taught how to care for cattle by her parents when she was a young girl and 30 years ago, inherited their small-scale cattle farm. Since then, she has attended livestock farming workshops run by the Department of Livestock Development and today has four local crossbreed cows. She hopes to grow the herd by breeding calves to sell to local livestock traders.
Sakhon also plans to plant Napier grass as a feed supply, as her herd requires approximately 30 to 40 kilograms of grass per day. Having a sufficient supply of Napier grass on the farm would significantly reduce her feeding costs – it would also ensure a consistent and nutritious source of feed year-round, allowing her to better support a larger herd.
Sakhon has applied for a loan to purchase two cows, straw bales and Napier grass seeds. She also plans to install a new roof on the cattle shed.
