Ecuador
Jorge Miguel is 59 years old, married, and lives in Carchi province, Ecuador. He has been working in agriculture for ten years, cultivating avocados on three hectares of his own land. He harvests twice a year and sells his produce in the local market at around £10 per sack. Additionally, he works as a labourer on other people’s vegetable farms.
Jorge began working in the fields at a young age, gaining the experience that allowed him to start his own avocado farm, a widely traded crop across Ecuador. He prepares the soil, plants seeds, and fertilises crops during three stages: planting, flowering, and growth. To support production, he employs fifteen people for planting and crop care. Annually, he harvests approximately 700 sacks of potatoes, selling them to city merchants.
Jorge has applied for a loan to invest in his business. He plans to spend about £600 on fertilisers, £600 on agricultural inputs, and £350 on wages for farm workers. With these resources, he will fertilise his crops on time, achieve a strong harvest, increase his income, and create employment opportunities in his community.
