Ecuador
Please note: Due to the current economic and social instability in Ecuador, the country is experiencing record levels of regional displacement and migration. While this is not a pattern we are seeing across the country, it is worth noting that during this time your loans in Ecuador may be at more risk of delay or non-repayment.
Ela, aged 28, is single and the mother of a school-age daughter. She is a poultry trader; buying and selling native creole hens and eggs, operating from her home in Cariamanga.
Ela started her poultry business when her daughter was born. Her mother gave her the first birds and the space. Over time she secured her first loan, expanded the coop, and built up a loyal clientele.
She sells 15 live hens per month, 10 dressed hens per month, and 80 dozen eggs per month. Her routine combines feeding, cleaning, egg collecting and grading, handling orders, and restocking feed.
The business yielding a profit of about £220 per month. In addition, she earns £210 per month from her job as a kitchen assistant, which covers the family expenses. Through discipline, Ela has gone from six initial hens to a functional poultry shed that sustains the household.
Her main bottleneck is working capital to renew laying hens, improve nests, and secure uninterrupted feed supplies. For that reason, she has requested a loan to buy laying hens, feed (maize and compound feed), and to build nests. This capital will raise the laying rate, reduce losses, and fulfil orders with stronger cash flow. Ela undertakes to repay the loan in 24 monthly instalments
