Ana, aged 33, is single and the mother of two children aged 11 and 7. Since 2018 she has been a coffee farmer in Palanda, and she now aims to expand her plot.
Ana focuses on coffee cultivation, carrying out weeding, shade and nutrition management, plant-health control, and harvesting. She supplements the household’s livelihood with day labour and trading in small livestock.
In financial terms, the micro-enterprise’s monthly income is £948, with operating expenses of £512, resulting in a net profit of £436. In addition, the household receives £300 (day labour and the rearing and sale of small animals), with family expenses of £120 (food, medicines, and school fees). Through hard work, Ana has managed to support her children’s educationn and acquire her own land to keep growing her crops.
However she faces the ongoing problems of coffee leaf rust, coffee berry borer, and winter frosts, which can reduce yields if not prevented in time. Even so, her course is clear: expand the productive area and stabilise cash flow. In order to achieve this she has applied for a loan to fund land clearing and the planting of an additional half hectare of coffee. This working capital will speed up the fieldwork (by hiring one temporary day labourer), reduce pests and weeds , and increase output next season. Ana undertakes to repay the loan in 24 monthly instalments
