Phalla, aged 26, is a young and hardworking farmer from Phnom Srok district in Banteay Meanchey Province, Cambodia. She has been involved in farming for the past few years and has built her livelihood around rice cultivation, which serves as the main source of income for her family.
Phalla currently farms wet-season rice on three hectares of land. Each season, she harvests around two tonnes of rice per hectare, which she sells directly to a local middleman who buys produce from farmers in her village. Every year, she rents a tractor from another villager to plough her land, which costs approximately £38 per hectare.
To improve her productivity and reduce ongoing rental expenses, Phalla has applied for a 36-month loan to purchase her own walking tractor. Having her own equipment will allow her to plough her fields on time, cut down on costs, and manage her farming operations more efficiently, just like many successful farmers in her community.
