Ecuador
Byron Geovanny is a 23-year-old farmer who lives with his family in Imbabura, northern Ecuador. He was born in a tropical region where his parents have always worked in agriculture. From them, he learnt how to cultivate the land and plant seeds.
With this knowledge, Byron began farming four years ago on a family plot, sowing tree tomatoes and beans. With his parents’ support, he has achieved good harvests and now employs twelve people to help with fertilisation and crop care. Each year, his farm produces around 1,482 sacks of tree tomatoes and 100 sacks of beans, which are sold in local markets and in the city of Otavalo.
In addition, Byron also works as a day labourer on other farms to earn extra income and support his parents.
Byron applied for a loan to invest in his crops. He plans to use £250 for fertilisers, £400 for agricultural supplies, and £75 for wages for six workers in his fields. With this loan, Byron aims to improve his production, achieve healthier harvests, offer his crops at better prices, and increase his income, while also creating more employment in his community.
