María is 51 and a single mother with two children, a daughter aged 11 who is at school and a son aged 20 who is working and helps pay the household expenses. She lives with her children in Imbabura which is in the north of Ecuador. María has been breeding and selling pigs for the past year and for the past five months she has been feeding and looking after the pigs every day.
María sells her pigs at markets and fairs for £112 or £149 each. Currently, she has six pigs which she is fattening and she sells meat twice a week generating an additional
income to help pay for her household expenses.
She needs to improve her farm and so she has requested a loan. With this she plans to buy materials such as cement, concrete blocks fibre cement roofing and sand which will cost £1,480 for renovating the farm and improving the housing for her pigs. She plans to use £522 to pay the wages of contract labourers for doing the building on the farm, and she will pay £313 to buy feed and vitamins to give good quality nutrition for healthy growth of her pigs.
