Ecuador
Carlos, aged 42, lives in the tropical region of Imbabura in northern Ecuador. He is an experienced farmer, having worked in agriculture for 20 years. He is married, and together with his wife, he manages their smallholding, mainly cultivating tree tomatoes, beans, avocados, and naranjilla. Their farm provides the household’s main source of income.
Carlos has dedicated two decades to nurturing his crops. From an early age, he learned farming skills from his father, including plant care, irrigation, and fertilisation. Upon reaching adulthood, he began working on his own crops on his father’s land, achieving abundant harvests that allowed him to sustain and expand his work, creating employment for others.
Currently, he employs ten people to tend the crops. Each year, his farm produces 1,482 boxes of tree tomatoes, 50 sacks of beans, and 310 boxes of avocados. These products are highly valued in the market for their nutritional benefits and culinary uses.
Carlos applied for a loan to fertilise his crops for improved yields. He plans to allocate two thirds for fertilisers and one third for other agricultural supplies, ensuring proper nourishment during every stage of plant growth, flowering, and production.
