Ecuador
Anthony Jeferson is a 21-year-old farmer living in the tropical region of Imbabura, in northern Ecuador. From a young age, he worked alongside his parents in the fields, helping to care for and plant crops on the family farm.
Two years ago, Anthony began cultivating his own land, thanks to a plot gifted to him by his parents. He now grows tree tomatoes and beans, using the knowledge passed down to him by his parents and through training sessions held in his local community.
This experience has helped him strengthen his farming practices. Through dedication and effort, Anthony currently harvests 1,026 sacks of tree tomatoes and 100 sacks of beans each year. He sells his produce at the markets in Quito and Otavalo.
To boost his income and ensure a high-quality harvest, Anthony has applied for a loan. He plans to invest £220 in ten sacks of fertiliser and £150 in other agricultural supplies. This will allow him to fertilise each of his fruit trees in preparation for harvest in three months' time.
With this investment, Anthony aims to improve the productivity and quality of his crops, strengthen his household finances, and create employment opportunities within his community.
