Oeurm is 52 years old, married with two children and lives in Morng Russey district of Battambang Province. His son works for a private company, while his daughter is at school. He has been a farmer for over 20 years and farms short-term rice for sale every year, providing an important source of income for his family.
Oeurm currently farms on two hectares of land. Since his rice paddy is located near an irrigation system, Oeurm is able to grow his rice twice a year and, over a period of 90 days, collects around five tonnes of rice per hectare for sale. The crops are sold directly to a local middleman who buys from his village. He usually rents another villager’s tractor to plough the rice paddy every year, costing him about £38 per hectare.
To reduce his ploughing costs and to invest in an important asset for his farming activities, Oeurm has applied for a 36-month loan in order to buy a walking tractor to enable him to plough his land. He will repay is loan in six installments over 36 months.
