Ecuador
Leydi Araceli is 29 years old, a single mother with one child. She lives with her young son in a family home located in the community of El Aguacate, in the north of Ecuador.
To support the expenses of her household, Leydi works in agriculture, a trade she has been practising for 10 years, which has become the main source of income for her family. Leydi grows onions and tender beans on three hectares of leased land, using a drip irrigation system in her garden to save water for each of her plants. Thanks to her hard work, she manages to harvest 720 sacks of onions and 80 quintals of tender beans each year, selling each sack for £16 in the city markets.
In addition, when her garden is resting, she works for others, carrying out agricultural tasks such as planting, harvesting, and fertilising.
To grow her income, Leydi has applied for a loan, which she will use for planting onions. She plans to allocate £400 for the purchase of onion seeds, £190 for fertilisers, £215 for agricultural supplies, and £100 to hire 10 workers to help with planting, cleaning, and harvesting the onions. With the intention of improving her home, Leydi will also spend £300 on purchasing new doors for her rooms.
Please note that loan repayments will be made every six months.
