Ecuador
Verónica, a 40-year-old farmer from Mira in northern Ecuador, has been managing her own farm for a decade, producing high-quality crops thanks to the knowledge passed down from her parents. They taught her the essentials of soil preparation, sowing, and the supplies needed for successful farming. Despite challenges posed by changing climates and other difficulties, Verónica’s determination has allowed her to thrive.
Each year, Verónica harvests an impressive 150 sacks of corn and 250 sacks of dried beans. To ensure a successful harvest, she hires additional labourers and receives support from her family. Her produce is sold to local wholesalers at £16 per sack, providing her with a steady income.
To further enhance her production, Verónica has applied for a loan. She plans to invest £426.30 in ten sacks of fertiliser, £821 in 16 sacks of agricultural supplies, and £332 to pay wages for 14 workers who will assist during the growing season. These improvements will enable Verónica to increase efficiency and ensure another productive year.
