Safia Ilyas

Safia Ilyas is 35, she’s from an area called Singh Pura in Lahore. She is married to Muhammad Ilyas and they have two sons and one daughter. Two of her children are going to school while the other one is still too young. Her husband and her are specialist embroiderers; they sew beads and other decorations into patterns, on fabrics that are used to make women’s clothing for weddings and other special occasions. They sell the finished clothes to retailers in different markets. Shopkeepers often provide them with the designs they require. They have been doing this for the past eleven years. Their income is around 13,000 Rupees per month. They reckon that the household pays 2,500 Rupees for utility bills, 9,000 Rupees for other household expenses, mainly food and clothing, and another 2,000 Rupees for the children’s studies. They want to produce and sell more in order to improve their living standards, and in particular save money for their children’s studies. Safia therefore applied for a loan to buy cloths as well as pearls, stars, stones, lace and fancy yarn. She will pay back her loan in 15 installments.
