Sorphon is a 25 year old married woman with three children, ranging in age from 10 years old down to a one year old. Her eldest child attends the local school while the younger two are still at home. The family live in the Bovel district of Battambang Province where she and her husband farm short term rice each year to provide the family income.
Sorphon has been a farmer for some years now; together with her husband she farms short term rice on their paddy field which is six hectares in size. With this variety of rice they can get two harvests per year amounting to a total of four tons of rice per hectare. All of their crops are sold to a local middle man who buys direct from their farm. She has now requested this loan which will be added to their savings to purchase an additional hectare of paddy field land. This additional land should yield a harvest of four tons of rice each and every year into the future.
