Safia Bibi is 51 years old resident of Kasur. She lives with her husband, two daughters and three sons. Four of her children are going to school/college, her eldest son is currently looking for a job. Her husband works in the private sector and earns about £62 a month. She works as a yarn extractor and earns around £53 monthly.
Safia Bibi has been doing this work for the past six years. She buys old and damage sweaters and other woollen items from thrift shops, factory outlets, and second-hand clothes storages and Lunda Bazar where used items sold for cheap rates. She sells the extracted yarn to local power looms as well to local women who make sweaters using woollen yarn.
Extracting yarn from old and damaged woollen products has a market and it gives many women an opportunity to earn an income from this activity for contributing towards their household needs.
Safia Bibi feels proud that she contributes her income towards the household costs and a small portion is re-invested into her small homebased enterprise. Due to the rise in the cost-of-living Safia Bibi and her husband are facing difficulty in maintaining household expenses. So, she wants to expand her small business. She has requested a loan from the Akhuwat Foundation which she will use for making a bulk purchase of old and damaged sweaters and other woollen products to improve her production.
