Ecuador
Sheyla Micaela is an entrepreneur who raises and sells fattening pigs where she lives in Saracay, a small rural village in southern Ecuador.
She also sells clothes and bazaar items to her clientele, mainly local women. She started these activities three and a half years ago, while studying at university. Currently, she sells 12 fattening pigs at a price of $300 (£241) each, and raises around $200 (£160) per month between sales of trousers, blouses and costume jewellery.
Thanks to her work, Sheyla has been able to pay for her studies and repair her parents' house where she lives. One of the difficulties she has faced is the appearance of diseases that affect the health of the animals, which puts her investment at risk; however, she remains optimistic and every day she works with more determination and looks for the best option for the care of the animals.
Sheyla is currently applying for a loan of $4.000 (£3,213) to buy 5 sows and 33 bags of feed. With this she hopes to increase her production and improve her income, and to continue fulfilling her goals of improving her quality of life and continuing her studies. She will repay the loan in 7 quarterly instalments over 21 months.
