Segundo Abel is 77 years old micro-entrepreneur, he continues to grow and sells cocoa, coffee and raises cattle and pigs. He is married to Mariana who has constantly supported him. They have 9 children who are now independent and have their own home, except for their last daughter who is a single mother and still lives with them.
Segundo Abel started this activity 18 years ago when he inherited a hectare of land from his parents and with the savings, he had he bought another piece of land plus four cattle and six piglets for fattening. On the land that he bought he planted 500 cocoa plants, which produced a quintal a month. Thanks to his business, Segundo has been able to support his nine children and has become a well-known farmer in his canton of Zumba, especially for the quality of the cocoa he produces and the quality of the meat of his cattle. He has now tripled his cocoa and coffee cultivation. The sale of his production generates an average monthly income of $1,180.00 (£946.70) leaving him a net profit of $800.00 (£641.83).
Segundo Abel applied for a loan of $2,500.00 (£2,005.61) to buy five cattle and to hire temporary labour for the cocoa and coffee harvest.
