Mrs. Mesa is a 30 year old married woman with a six year old daughter who attends the local school. The family live in the Phnom Srok District of Banteaymeanchey Province where she and her husband farm both rice and cassava each year which is sold to provide the family income.
Mrs. Mesa has been a farmer for some years now. Together with her husband she farms wet season rice on their paddy field which is two hectares in size and from which they get a harvest of two tons of rice per hectare. They have a second plot of land which is three hectares in size which is used for growing cassava and from which they get a crop-yield of ten tons of cassava per hectare. All of the crops are sold to a local middle man who buys direct from their farm. In order to increase their rice harvest and hence their annual income she has requested this 36 month loan to purchase an additional hectare of paddy field land on which to grow more wet-season rice.
