Pakistan
The Sachay Log group of smallholder farmers comprises of 5 members. In total the members have 22 dependents, seven children. Four children are going to school and three are infants. The group members all live in the same village in the district of Kasur in north-eastern Pakistan. As with most farmers in their region, they grow rice, wheat and maize. The member sell their crops to cover their farming and household finances.
The surplus crops are shared among their own families and neighbours (who have little) so that everyone can have access to food. The members also grow vegetables for their family’s own consumption
Waris Ali is one of the members of the Sachay Log group. He is married and has two infant daughters. He owns 6 acres of land where he grows wheat in the winter and rice in the summer to sell. He keeps part of the harvest for his household's own use and sells the remaining for covering all the financial costs. He estimates that he earns about £1,250 profit per year. He and his group members have around 20 acres of land between them. They requested a loan from our local partner Akhuwat to buy a tractor to help them increase productivity. At the moment, they have to rent a tractor, which can be relatively expensive and unreliable since there is not always a tractor available when they need one. The tractor will also be used to transport the harvested crops and they might rent out the tractor to earn an extra income to help in paying off the loan.
